My Fair Lady is a musical based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story concerns Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phoneticist, so that she may pass as a lady.

The original play
Pygmalion is a play by George Bernard Shaw, named after a Greek mythological figure. It was first presented on stage to the public in 1913.
In ancient Greek mythology, Pygmalion fell in love with one of his sculptures, which then came to life. The general idea of that myth was a popular subject for Victorian era English playwrights, including one of Shaw's influences, W. S. Gilbert

Robert W. Lerner, Alan Jay Lerner's brother, lived in Monterrey and produced the first spanish translation of "My Fair Lady." The show opened at the María Teresa Montoya Theater with a huge success, followed by its debut in Guadalajara, and finally at the Palacio de Bellas Artes and the Esperanza Iris Theater in Mexico City.
During its run in Bellas Artes, the renowned Placido Domingo played one of Alfred Dollitle's friends, and Manolo Fábregas played professor Higgins.
